Spend 1 Hour in HB

We had a 2 day break from terrible weather and rain. This was day 2. This is a typical 2-3 ft NW swell, rights running away from the pier with Simpo, Navarro, Micah, and Peters running them down.

The Reunion Session

The waves have been bad for sooooo long. Bad weather, lack of swell, filthy water quality. Finally, today we got a little NW Swell and a break in the weather. Everyone came out of hibernation to chat and catch a few waves. Tomorrow looks good too!

Waring and Navarro

Still recovering from the flat spell, the boys are frothing on 2 footers. Ted finally upgraded his 2mm wetsuit that he's been wearing in 55 degree water, the only problem is that it's bright red. If you see him in the lot, give him some milk and cookies.

The waves have been flat for 3 solid weeks. We finally got a little pulse, with more on the way. A lot of the boys are in Hawaii, but those who aren't were eager to greet the swell at the pier. More to come!

A Love Letter to You, our Noble Audience

I received a very interesting comment recently. Someone mentioned that I ought to collect sponsor funds and send Ted Navarro to finally surf some good waves. I agree.

Dealing with "business" was never my intended objective. However, this 1 Hour in HB project has become something much more than I ever anticipated, mainly due to your viewership, and I think we certainly do now have certain responsibilities.

The way I see it, surf media should be free for all. My films will always remain free for viewers. My concern is for the surfers. They are paid (or underpaid) by sponsors. Sponsors want exposure and an audience. This is where you come in. You are the audience and your sole responsibility is to click "Play". The more you watch, the more the surfers are likely to earn and the more they are able to travel and produce more content.

The media landscape has changed. Surfer's compensation is slowly catching up. 1 Hour in HB currently has between 2,000-10,000 "plays" (not "page loads", actual "plays") per week. If we had, say, 20,000 plays a day, sponsors would be forced to take note. If we had 100,000 plays a day, sponsors would be forced to compensate surfers for that exposure. Ryan Carlson can't keep pulling flips if one day he has to get a day-job. If you like watching the video of him stomping a backflip, watch it again, and then send it to your friends. Send the video to Cole Surfboards and tell them to shape you a board just like his.

I have begun to receive monetary offers from companies to support 1 Hour in HB. I have been reluctant to accept any compensation because I want to maintain objectivity and sole creative control of all content. However, as 1 Hour in HB continues to demand more of my time and attention, monetizing it is inevitable. My main concern is that my focus will shift, so I burden you with the task of always sending me feedback. If you want more of something, tell me. Less of something, tell me. If you like something, say it. If you hate something, let me know. This is a collaborative project between myself, the surfers, and you the audience, and all of us share equal responsibility. The main reason that I keep producing films is because you keep watching. The more you watch, the more inspired I am to produce.

I, too, want to see Ted Navarro surf good waves. My role in that effort is to expose how well he surfs in HB, and your role is to watch. If we do that enough, his sponsors will send him to Hawaii and then the world can watch.

Thank you for watching 1 Hour in HB, and thank you for reading this rant. 1 Hour in HB is aimed to be my contribution back to the sport that has given me so much. If you would like to continue supporting my effort, just keep clicking "play".

And maybe tell your friends to watch too.

Thanks,
David Scales

Gorkin Ripping - 1 Session in Newport

He throws a few air revos, a Gorkin Flip, a huge layback, and bunch of rips, wraps, and cuts and does it all in 1 session. Nice surfboarding, bro!

Oakley Comp Warm up Session

While the crew was setting up the Oakley event for tomorrow, another crew was in the water doing work. I'll post more footage from this session soon, but these are the highlights. The waves were shoulder high, peaky, rampy and super ripable.

May in 1 Minute

This is the recap of the month of May in 1 minute. Just the highlights from the past month, no fancy edits or artsy stuff, just surfing.

Good job to those who made the cut. Keep it up.

Dustin Hein and Dorsal Fins

We're just doing out thing and this dude walks up with no leash, a spray painted board, and a bandage on his forehead. He cruises out and shredded right through all the hot groms. Foster eventually identified him as Dustin Hein, a name I hadn't heard in years. I used to see him around Newport ripping years ago. Dustin, if you are out there, please confirm that this is you.

This guy rips!

1 Session in Newport - Day 2

Summer is approaching and traveling pros are beginning to rip the crap out of our beachbreaks. Yesterday morning Aaron Cormican, Chippa Wilson, Tyler Newton and Jesse Guglielmana joined local pros for a showdown at 54th st. Lots of great surfing took place and I'll be posting more from this session soon. Enjoy!

1 Session in Newport

Tyler Newton and Jesse Guglielmana are in town visiting from Kauai. They cruised down to to 54th for a sesh with local boys Ted Navarro, Chase Wilson, Matt Pagen, Joey Head and Chris Waring. The waves were super rippable and Newton put on an Air Reverse clinic. Ripping!

Creek Run - Episode 2

We had such a solid swell the last few days, but the wind killed it. Today was the first day that we had really clean conditions but unfortunately the swell was dying.

Navarro and I made the drive to Salt Creek and he got some good ones. On the way back to HB I stopped by 54th st and caught the tail end of Tyler Newton and Jesse Guglielmana's session. Apparently, Southside HB was pretty good too. Enjoy.

Chippa Airs

Chris "Chippa" Wilson was attempting some weird Passion Pop variations. He also easily stomped a few greasy ones. The dude rips.

3 Waves Each - Chippa, Navarro, Quinn, Sylvester

The expected south swell hasn't yet arrived but some Aussies were still here to bounce around on what little peaks the NW swell provided. Local talent Ted Navarro and Quinn McCrystal also took advantage.

Running Sandbar

The weather cleared and while the waves were still small, the sandbar started working for about an hour before the wind turned on. Of course 400 people were on it, but the boys still got a few and of course Carlson stomped some massive airs. Just another day south of the pier.

Shedding Slop - Simpo, Peters, McCrystal, Kanoa

The waves were small and crappy yet again. Nevertheless, Brett Simpson, Quinn McCrystal, Derek Peters and Kanoa Igarashi were battling for little racey peaks.

This is what I got in 45 minutes.

Kalani David was also out but I didn't identify him til I was done filming. He was launching a few airs.

May 6th, 2010 - 2 edits

This was a crazy session. Below are two different edits. One slow-mo'd and one regular motion. Enjoy! The bottom also has some Brett Simpson footage from early in the same morning.

Filming with Ted and Ryan, but Balaram was out and got some BOMBS! That kid rips.

Foster, Cozad, and Driftwood all got great photos from the session so look for that or post the link here. I was the only videographer so here ya go!

Car-Rupt Air Session - May 6th, 2010 from David Lee Scales on Vimeo.

Filmed early with Simpo at the pier before he went to lowers for his heat that afternoon. Then cruised down to Newport with Ted and Ryan. Balaram was out and got some epic barrels. Carlson pulled the craziest Car-rupt flip. All in all, it was a super solid morning of surfing.

Pre Trestles Warm Up Sesh

The Trestles event is setting up and swell is on the way. The event started today (Tuesday) but all the local boys and some of their visiting teammates came down to the pier mid morning to test out some boards and stretch out their legs. Here is what they accomplished in 1 Hour.

Creek Run - Teddy Navarro and Ryan Carlson

On an average sunny Saturday morning with blue water and families on the beach, Carlson and Navarro made a run down to Salt Creek and stomped a few airs and revos in front of a bunch of bodyboarders. Here is what we got in 1 hour.

Revival - Brett Simpson and Shaun Ward

Revival - Brett Simpson and Shaun Ward from David Lee Scales on Vimeo.

The waves were terrible and totally blown out. No one wanted to surf, then Brett and Shaun showed up and made the waves actually look pretty fun. There was a serious current and they were paddling non-stop, but even still they found a couple wedgy little peaks on the inside and lit em up!

Southside This Morning

Teddy Navarro, Derek Peters, Kanoa Igarashi, and Micah Byrne.

The waves looked terrible early on, but when the tide backed off slightly everything started to stand up a bit. Teddy was getting disco. Derek was getting retro. It was overhead for Kanoa. And Micah put on a cutback clinic. Just another day south of the pier.

3 Dogs and 3 Airs by Chase Wilson

With viturally nowhere to surf, 56th had a little inside bump and Chase made the most out of it by pulling wheelies and fly aways. This what he did with 30 minutes.

A lot of people walk little dogs in Newport.

Spring Break 2010

I rolled up in the parking lot and thought I had stumbled into a Star Trek convention. It turns out Paintballers are a very similar demographic.

Spring Break has sprung in HB. Look at this dudes face. So classic.
